Festive Joy & 2017 Thoughts to ask Yourself


I hope this finds you and your family really well?  I just wanted to write a mini letter to send you lots of festive joy, and good wishes for a wonderful year ahead.  I used to always put my thoughts together for the Energised Christmas Letter, then in 2013 when weils encephalitis appeared my world has been in a bit of chaos!  Yet chaos, I have learned, gives you so much.  It teaches your patience and trust, compassion, hope, commitment and courage.  So, if your 2016 has been chaos, have faith that things will start to open up and flow.  And if your 2016 has been awesome, make sure you truly embrace and celebrate this, as one never truly knows around the corner. Be present this Festive Time and have the very best time you possibly can…. Love to know your best moment and gift!

For me this year has been developing Energised Performance which celebrated its 12th Birthday in May, wow, time flies!! I can remember plotting ideas when I was at school (a wee while ago!).  Since then we have such varied and wonderful clients, from 16 to 79 years old, from Bristol our base, to Scotland, Kuwait, L.A., Australia, Bali, Dubai, Chicago, Egypt and many other locations!  The wonders of Skype mean that quality coaching is possible anywhere, and that’s really exciting. I have been coaching various CEOs for global companies, working with my celebrity clients including Strictly Come Dancing & Team GB for Rio and now 2020.

I think my real festive thought for you would be this….. if you could make something happen in 2017, what would that be?   No limits, just possibilities.  From that list of things you keep saying you would like to do…. What will you commit to this year?  Write that down now, go on, dare you… take a moment and jot the idea in your diary for 7th January. Then, when you open your diary it will be there reminding you to take action….!

Along with being super grateful for so many brilliant clients from athletes to GP referral, body confidence to life coaching, I have managed to work out how to still achieve things myself and hopefully motivate you in a little way. Having trained in DNA Fitness & Nutrition testing, I have personally really benefited from ‘playing’ with my training to see what is possible.  Based on one run a week, and quality strength sessions I have managed to run the Transylvanian Bear Ultra Marathon, #kims100miles (supposedly in India, but I got knocked clean out by a cyclist whilst walking, so a neck brace and broken elbow but stop to that, but I still walk/jogged the miles!) and completed a monthly 10km for Encephalitis Society Awareness.  This may sound crazy, which it kind of was, but, I totally loved exploring various places and am super proud to say it takes my fundraising total to over £80,000 for charity and gained my Diamond Duke of Edinburgh Award, yippee!

I wonder if you have a goal or event you would like to achieve in 2017?  If you had told me at the beginning of 2016 I would have achieved even one of these, I would have laughed and smiled politely!  Yet, I’ve realised that often you just have to take the first step and the way will gradually open up.  Either allowing you to achieve your goal, or giving you lessons and insights into what you need to do to make it possible. Or perhaps let it go and do something else.  Either way, it creates space and opportunity to move forwards, rather than keep wondering… I wish…… SO if you could, what would you wish to do, and if I can help you, just let me know. Write it down too, or your brain will forget this letter (if it’s got this far!), in the melee of Christmas chaos… go one, dare you… commit.

I have always written many features for magazines, my Ambassador roles for Sweaty Betty, Shock Absorber and other companies. Although I really wanted to write a book to follow the Women’s Fitness Mag Book, I didn’t know how to make it happen.  It’s funny how life happens, as in February this year,

I rescued a great Staffy called Jake! I am his third home, so it’s taken a lot of training and trust, yet he’s so full of joy and life.  Through walking him daily I started to create my of the Hound of Happiness – 52 Tips to Feel Good Book.  I decided, let’s go for this and found a self-publishing coach, took the leap of investment and I’m excited to say that the little book is ready for pre order on our crowdfunding page & both websites.  I hope the tips will help people to let go of doubts and fears, growing their confidence and inner happiness.


This is really just a tiny rambled snap shot of some of the things I’ve been up to.  You are all, often in my thoughts, and I think time, modern society, life challenges and overwhelm can often cause people not to catch up.  I think the last few years have made me realise, even more so, how important life is, how taking a risk and being brave is key. Yet knowing when to pause and allow space for spontaneity or just being, is real awareness.

I suppose my final little thought and action for you is this.  Get in touch with a few friends, who you value, reach out to them and give a random act of kindness, you never know how much it might mean.  Then pause for a moment in January and reflect on what you loved and learned in 2016, and what the truly simple things are that make you happy.  Make sure you create a little time to allow these habits to be nurtured and less helpful ones reduced…. And remember to change something, even if your change is really important, it is different. Adventuring Soul…..

I’m not sure where I will be when you read this….!
Scotland, Bristol or somewhere in India….. I should be running the Himalayan 100miler for charity but due to the bike knocking me out, I’m unsure if I will be able to go due to my elbow of all things..
Anyhow, whatever happens it will be the right decision and I will be running the 100 miles for five little charities in India next Monday to Friday, or the UK Tuesday to Saturday, finishing with the Beachy Head Marathon. Whilst I am away (I hope to be able to update you all along the way) I thought these three thoughts were a great little ‘exercise’ to leave you with,

What fills you with passion, excitement and joy, maybe a little fear? It’s different for everyone yet reconnect with that, make a little plan and find the time to start growing your passions with purpose, even if it’s slightly different to how you imagine 💜

You could choose to relax this week, refresh next and reconnect the following… write a little diary and keep me posted how you go 🙂

My Adventure through Sierra Leone, Running & Life…

It’s been a couple of years to the day since this amazing experience & I just wanted to share my journey again…. grab a green tea and have a read.

I’m sitting by a beach, the sound of the waves crashing around me. As I look out, the sun is rising, a few fishing boats are heading out to sea, the kind we see in films.  I wanted to write this before I came back to the UK, as you often lose those little nuggets of thought, the moment you land. I’ve only been away 6 days, yet the sights, sounds & smells of Sierra Leone have impacted me, more than I could have imagined.

As I drove to drove to Gatwick I didn’t really know if I would make the flight.  Travelling has been part of my life, I’m lucky.  Yet the last year, my complex medical mix has challenged who I am, made me apprehensive and nervous to do things, things I  would normally not considered for a moment.

But this blog isn’t about me. That’s to set the scene. This blog is about Sierra Leone, take a moment and have a read, because if I can captivate just a tiny moment of what I gained from this week, it will be worth the moment you have spent reading it.

I was part of ‘Team Gambia’, flying with Gambia Bird Airlines.  A simple, happy airline, that does the job easily & efficiently. It also sets the scene for the trip, no on board duty free or extra snacks. 7 hours later, with a few delays we landed in Freetown later on the Wednesday afternoon.

Stepping out into the hot African air, you could smell the difference as well as see it…. Having had two of my attacks on the flight, I was feeling pretty tired and apprehensive, yet a buzz of excitement tingled in the background.  We jumped into a ‘taxi’ and headed to Makeni.  Now, you have to remember, this is Sierra Leone, it’s a country in development.  I love this, but patience is key.  2 hours later we found some diesel, after sitting surrounded by locals in complete chaos, music and mangoes all around. And when I mean chaos, think about a festival, add horns, music, chatter, insects buzzing and more… and you might be half way there to the scene!  Then, we actually began our journey, yet no sooner had we begun a massive electric storm started.


Again, think of the storms in the UK and triple the intensity, volume, noise and craziness!  How we drove anywhere in it, I have no idea. Were we remotely safe, I doubt it, but that’s the joy of adventuring.


Arriving at Makeni, I was dropped off at my Motel, Menahills around 1am, rained flowed out of my room and a variety of local bugs greeted me.  Yet, I was pleasantly surprised to find a bed and a loo to sit on (all be it buckets of water to flush it), way above my expectations.  I almost felt disappointed I didn’t need to dig a hole in the ground, like I had in Belize several years ago!


After a good nights sleep and only a couple of mozzies having a snack on some white person, we headed out to the first Street Child project, a short bus ride away.

Street Child has been formed to help the children on the streets of Sierra Leone, many displaced from the recent turbulent times, poverty, teenage pregnancy & mining. As I write this, Street Child is expanding into several other countries. What they are doing is truly making a real and local difference.  They have integrated brilliant, simple structures into the country, working with the locals. The money you donate really does make a huge difference.


As we stepped off the bus, so many little children were waiting to greet us, singing and dancing, with the biggest smiles and great excitement.  What I love about countries like this, is children are children.  They laugh and smile, we played and danced together, there was no inhibitions.  Whilst we are helping them undoubtedly, without doubt they can help us.  They can remind us that the art of play, conversation, time and just being is so important.   The project we visited helps the younger children with counselling, finding their parents, support and business loans to set up their own business.


Once we had learned more about the children, we went into the local village and met some of the business owners, so proud of what they had developed.  A real community in development, sustainable and proactive, really exciting to see & feel.


As we walked through the markets the smell is intense, fish and chicken mixed with Africa… it really hits you. I’m pretty sure we ‘hit’ them too. We are right in the middle of Sierra Leone, white people are not that common, blonde blue eyed girls cause distinct cautiousness!


From this project, the following day we headed around 3 hours into the depths of the country down dirt tracks, bouncing along. We passed tiny little huts, people working the fields, goats, dogs, children, chickens, and dense jungle.  It’s hard to really give you a picture and sense of where we were, if you ever watch Sport Relief, think it’s like these projects but even more remote.  The crazy thing was, that after driving for that long we ended up in a large mining village, to visit one of the Secondary School Projects from Street Child.


Waiting was the head teacher, clad in black, shades on, with a plastic rod in is hand, sitting on a motorbike.  The contrasts of Sierra Leone never ceased to amaze me. He led us into the school, where we met hundreds of children, dressed in beautiful uniforms, chaotic but exceptionally well behaved.  Carrying their desks and chairs to sit and talk to us under the trees.


Understanding the importance of education, the role of the mother and father, being responsible for yourself, and wanting to the best was a key message they understood. Again, something I feel we can learn from them.  There is a weird mix of childlike passion, expression and joy, combined with so many of them being parents at such a young age.



The development of the projects that Street Child gives is undoubtedly invaluable, it gives them a structure & a basis for learning, a basis for choice in life.  Yet, they are such a fragile country economically that these remote villages really do benefit from our support.  The best thing is, the support is real, it’s building a community, work and system for the future, for them.


From the school, we went to the most beautiful waterfall, again, I am sure in the UK we would only be able to ‘look’ at it from afar.  Yet, with a quick health and safety assessment (!), we jumped into the side and swam down the rapids.  Exhilerating, refreshing and necessary for a wash after three days!


I have not been in any open water since Weils disease, I had to have a chat with myself to join in, but I could not have asked for a better place to get ‘back’ in the water. Sometimes things are not ‘safe’ but sometimes I think we miss out on life, because we are thinking about the what if, rather than the now.  Life’s a choice, make your choices wisely and positively. Swimming in that water, was the best moment to take a moment and reflect on my year.  I still can’t comprehend it, but it was amazing to be back in the water. Thank you Team Gambia for being with me.


I made the bus journey back, without another attack which was a blessing. As I’m pretty sure the driver on the way out thought the devil had taken me over when I had one on he way out.


Safely back in my hut, a night of African tummy appeared. Fortunately I only had this for 12 hours, and things settled (until I returned home!).


Saturday was registration day for the marathon, half and 10km.  Now, it’s around 30 degree’s or more, it’s humid in Makeni, 95% was the rumour rippling through the runners, and race day was expected to be a hot one.


Excile Medics, led by Brett were an amazing, efficient team, and advised me not to run with my conditions, and the race director Greg was in agreement.  I know it probably sounds crazy, and I know it was potentially a little unwise, but I just know my body and know what sets the attacks off.  It’s busy environments, noise, multi conversations, music, travel.  I had done 4, 18+ mile runs with no adverse reactions, plenty of strength training and packed loads of medical kit.  However, as I registered and received number 323 I thought to myself, Kim is this really wise.  I just didn’t know.


I always said, 25th May is a year to the day since I got Weils Disease, I want to run the marathon, draw a line under it, accept how radically my life has changed and how I have been challenged and flow on.  So I went home, bought crisps, chocolate and dry biscuits, not my usual pre race diet but the alternative was the local food, which pre race I knew was a risk as it didn’t seem to stay with me!



I did my mental preparation, wrote down all my options if things went wrong and went to sleep, well sort of!  Up at 3.30am, breakfast and the bus to the start line.  The maddest thing was all the Sierra Leone’s warming up for half an hour for their marathon, in the dark, even though it was about 27 degrees.  That’s what I love about different cultures and people, everyone is different.


I stayed away from the noise and group, and really didn’t have a clarity in what was right, I didn’t want to go against the team decision, but I trusted myself.  I knew however, if I headed out, I would do everything in my powers to not use the medics, as I felt this was unfair as I was going against their advice.


So I started… I still don’t know how really.  There we are, around 300 white runners, jogging through the hustle and bustle of remote West Africa one morning, with the locals staring in disbelief, cheering, thanking us & the children running with excitement alongside us.   It’s moments like this I feel truly grateful to be alive, to be given opportunities and have the courage to take them. When are you ever going to get this chance again? I would prefer to live a short, full life and inspire someone to have courage to do something they really want, rather than a longer, safe life.  Hopefully I will have a long, full, crazy life. But what I have learned this year is there are no guarantees in life, you can have a plan, and goals, but sometimes, it just doesn’t happen how you plan.  The key is having the courage to be flexible and make something from where you end up.  I won’t say this is easy, but really it’s a choice and one I wanted to make…


As we jog walked along, I knew I had to decide at the turn point for half marathon, if I would continue. Something about 6am in the morning lulls you into a false sense of security, we did the first 7 miles relatively comfortably (Sierra time!) and the turn point appeared.  I didn’t feel ready to turn, I was at the back of the group and could just see three guys I had met with Team Gambia ahead.


I thought, if they are happy for me to be with them, I will go on, if not I will go with the girls on the half marathon route… the boys, Mark, Michael and Jamie were happy so full marathon route began! We walk jogged on, singing, dancing with locals, having a great time, but I was aware of a big ball of heat rising above us, stronger than any other day, and slightly apprehensive.


12 miles in, we all realized that a marathon in Sierra Leone, whilst I knew was going to be a challenge, was really going to be challenging.


I am not designed for heat, even on a really good, healthy day and I realized that nothing in the UK can really prepare you to run in this environment. Mark and I reckoned we drank about 12 litres of water and electrolytes, ate a lot of mango, jelly beans and bounce balls, and talked a lot about what we would like to eat, madness setting in!




At 14 miles I realized that if I wanted to even try and complete the marathon, it would have to be a walk as my brain was only happy with that.  I asked the boys if they were happy with this, knowing if the answer was no, it was the finish.  They agreed and we carried on. Nothing could prepare me for the next 12 miles.


Such a surreal experience, there was a moment, where I stopped and took it all in.  Walking through a tiny path, jungle, half ‘naked’ Africans following us with intrigue, the sun radiating down on our white skin, crickets in the trees, mangoes everywhere I wondered what on earth I was doing, how on earth I was going to complete it, and how utterly mad it was to be in the complete depths of the jungle, yet how completely amazing this was.


I don’t think there are words to explain the moments, yet I hope these words capture just the essence, a feel for you.


As we walked on, we were last, beyond last.  It’s an interesting place to be, yet you can’t hurry in the African sun, well I can’t. You have to respect a marathon wherever you are doing it, expect the unexpected, and listen to your body.  In Africa, you have to do the same and more.


What surprised me and I still cannot comprehend is quite how slowly we were going, yet we really never stopped.  I had worked out in my plan, that the slowest I could possibly be was 6.5hrs. So at 7hrs with quite a while to still go, I have no idea how we finished.


There was a part, walking along a railway track, with the sun beating down around 1pm, when I thought, there is no way I can do this, I am literally done.


Yet somehow, something inside me had the belief if was possible.  I think it was the gratitude to the support team, the organisers, medics and Mark walking with me, that I had to do it.


To thank them, and thank you all for the donations made.  We were definitely well hydrated, but empty on energy, definitely needing more food. There were moments I felt I could actually fall asleep whilst I was walking, yet every time I had a moment in my mind, I kept it there.  Ididn’t express it as I knew I would be whisked into the medic vechile.


Because, the childrens faces lit up as you passed them, the eldery people smiled and said thank you, the empty space gave me the courage to keep going.  The support bikes would appear, photographers & organisers occasionally to check up on us too, this all kept us going.


Around 4 miles to go we met up with Michael and Jamie, who were suffering in the heat, this kind of gave me a focus, I wanted to help them finish, so we could all do it together.  So an interesting quartet wandered through the final stages, herded by a very concerned medical team into the finish.


I don’t know what I expected to feel at the finish, but I actually felt nothing, not relief, or emotion.  The four of us lay on the floor, quietly.  Greg the organizer, patiently waiting, placed a medal around our necks, 8hrs 30mins approximately.  No one else apart from the Medics were around, for me with my brain this was perfect, no noise.


I always said I would give the toy rat I have had for a year, that represents the Weils Disease to a street child if I finished the marathon.  ‘Roland’ had come with me all the way around.


There was a group of 5 boys, one was a little younger with big eyes, looking up at this weird blonde white girl.  I gave him Roland.  I know he loved it, his face lit up, and he is of an age that it’s a cool thing to have. He was totally bemused too and followed me until we left.  Roland has a happy home in Sierra Leone now.


How do you summarise and end a blog like this, I don’t really know.


It was only 6 days. But it was 6 ‘days’ of life to the full, colour, feelings, emotions, tastes, smells, conversation, cultures…. And story book and film of everything you can possibly imagine all wrapped into one.


What the organisers did to summarise the week was to head to ‘The Place’, a new resort by the beach, totally idyllic and a complete contrast to the week we experienced, sheltered from the ‘real’ Sierra Leone.


I’m not sure what I felt at first about this, it seemed ‘wrong’.  But then I realized that life and the world is a crazy place, what works for one person, won’t necessarily work for another.  That ‘The Place’ is a place people can come and experience a bit of Sierra Leone yet still feel ‘safe’.  This helps their country and people too.


Sierra Leone is a safe place, with beautiful people, amazing scenery and full of smiles.  It’s also like India on red bull, totally hectic, smells like rotten chicken & fish (to me, not in a bad way, just a Sierra way), they have their own time, things are developing yet I gained as much as we gave, more infact.


I was reminded that friendship and communication is key to happiness, that switching off all your internet (there was no option) and being in the moment is essential to find what makes you, you. And that time, just time, to explore and adventure, whatever that means to you, is good for you.


I work with a lot of people on body image, confidence and mental strength, fitness and performance.  This is great, this is essential with the pressures of the western world. Yet I would really love you to take a moment and get in the moment.  It’s not about making the difference,  it’s about living your life in a way that makes the difference for you and those around you.

The women here are beautiful, and womanly, boobs and bums, walking tall, carrying all sorts of things on their heads, eggs for instance, how do they do that?!  The men are strong and agile, whilst spending a lot of time sitting, recharging. The children are free, happy and open.  When you donate to any charity, you are giving to help someone. Yet I fully believe, by giving you receive too, you receive learnings and lessons in life if you are open.  So be open, and be bold, be brave and remember you are beautiful.


As I finish this blog and reflect on what I hoped to gain from the week, I gained so much, I don’t know where to begin, yet equally I have no idea what I have gained yet.  Does that make sense?
I somehow believed that I could come to Sierra Leone, do a little work, run a marathon and draw a line under Weils & encephalitis.  That somehow, I had imagined it all, and I would be able to run it out.  That by giving back to Street Child I would find myself again, find my confidence and belief.


Whilst in some sense this happened, externally. Internally it didn’t.


I was scared, felt vulnerable, challenged and questioned myself constantly, feelings I never have experienced before this year.  I felt guilty about ‘stressing’ those closest to me for going , yet knew I had to go for me, so had a weird mix of emotions to start with.  I have always thought I must have made it up my conditions (of course I know I have not), yet it’s the weirdest thing to explain, a brain condition and neurological effect that one minute has you unable to connect thoughts and flailing around on the floor, to the next being totally fine.


So what did happen from my week?  This.


I raised money and awareness for an amazing, young charity, Street Child doing some life changing work for a vulnerable, courageous country.  Hopefully I inspired someone reading this, that if you want to change something, it doesn’t have to be a big challenge (this really isn’t necessary or for everyone), it is possible and will add immense value to your life.


My company, Energised Performance’s values are to give back, 10% each year and raise money through completing challenges. Energised is 10 this year, my aim is to hit £40k,a nd I hope this goes some way to making this happen.


I met, like anything you do in life, wonderful, inspiring, courageous people, from all ages and backgrounds.  I was part of Team Gambia Bird Airline who funding us to go, huge thanks to them. I have made many fearless, fun friends, especially Michelle, Michael, Jamie, Ellie, Charlotte, and I am grateful to Gambia Bird, especially Tom for choosing me to be part of the Team.  The Organising Team, the charity and everyone who supported me, Greg, Tom, Brett & his Medic Team, John the photographer, Mark my walking side kick.


Finally, I learned about me. You learn about yourself every day.  A year ago I assumed  this year I would be married, maybe with a child, and Energised would have a bigger premises in Bristol.


One day,  last year, everything changed in a moment, these are not my options right now, or my life right now, and that really is okay.


I’m still me, I’m still stubborn, brave, slightly crazy, kind, compassionate, honest, with a passion to learn, grow, become better & help others do the same.  To make a difference.


Yet I realized last night, when I had one of my biggest attacks on the floor in ‘The Place’, that this is the place I am at right now.  A totally different place to where I planned and actually, it is more than okay.


I know I had not accepted the changes, I had just become very good at managing them so I could kind of ignore them, and also not let anyone see them.  You can’t do that in Sierra Leone on a plane, on a bus or on a project, so I also realized I’m not making them up.  I always knew I wasn’t but didn’t want to admit something had happened I can do nothing about.


Sierra Leone taught me that I am okay. I am still me, life is just different. I always said that but had not accepted it. I’m not going to say it’s easy, because it’s not. It’s challenging & scary, and I know it’s going to take time. Maybe it will go, maybe it won’t, apparently it can take a few years for the nervous system to re wire properly.


What I know now is it doesn’t matter, because I can do most things if I am wise and sensible. (I just have to get a mediband so people don’t think I’m being attacked by the devil!).


I’m truly grateful for life.  I’m grateful to each little smiling African face, to each Street Child and each Sierra Leone Marathon person who has been there in the moments, they won’t have even realized it, but they have been.


I left Sierra by swimming out into the ocean, further than I have done in a year…. I turned and faced the mountains and realized in that moment, I will be okay. And I am surrounded by people who are happy to go on adventures with a crazy girl who has ‘moments’ that need people to look after her.


I’m grateful for the moments, the moments of laugher and happiness, health and learning.  If you get a moment when you think you are not good enough, realize that you are.  The people in West Africa don’t know otherwise, they are focusing on making their life, and making their country better.


Focus on making your life better, with what you can control, and let go of everything you can’t. Laugh, Love, Live. Be Bold & Brave. Believe in You.


And if you have a crazy dream or goal, anything truly is possible. With Patience, Tenacity & Courage.


I don’t know what I’ll do next, I don’t know where my life will go, but what I do know is that stepping into the unknown, doing the one thing that scares you most, is probably the most important thing you should do, when you are ready.


I’ve now just read this having landed back in Bristol…. A 5 hour bus ride delayed by goats and general Sierra chaos, a flight with no sleep and a body that is really suffering from the week, African belly, throat, head, who knows what but I will take all of this in a heart beat, for I will be okay.  Just know that it’s not the best ‘state’ so worth a pounds donation for Street Child if you enjoyed reading this….


6 days in Sierra Leone, I hope the moment you took to read it, gave you a moment’s thought, thank you for reading it, I really am grateful.

16 Things you Could do this Year…..

How are you doing?
I hope you had a really good first full week of 2016.
I’ve been reading some great features and articles…. and thought I would summarise what you should (or could) do in 2016….. LOVE to know what you think you should or will be doing!
1. Practise Compassion towards yourself & others – buying a ‘self worth’ money pot, so each week you pop in a £1 or whatever you want, once it’s full you can smash it and spend it on your goal, your friends, whatever you want… yet it’s the act of growing your self worth that makes a difference :-)
2. Go on a weekly Digital Detox for at least 4 hours a week, switch everything off… use this time to read a book, have a ‘learning’ book and a relaxation book, depending how you feel.
3. Plan a monthly adventure, it doesn’t have to be big, just go and explore for a day – it could be anything from climbing a mountain to trying a new sport, visiting a new city, seeing friends you have not done for a long time.
4. Learn a new skill or language – easier than you think if you download podcasts, or buy CD’s for your car, when you train, instead of social media time… just a thought.
5. Walk More, Strengthen your Posture, Breathe more Deeply & Speak more Positively to Yourself…. overall self worth & health growth
6. Nurture your ‘wealth’ and practise an attitude of gratitude when you spend or pay a bill….. read the Financial papers every now and then, save for something that really matter’s to you ( or something you want to do/give to others, even if this takes years) and LOVE what you can do.
7. Sign up for something that scares you, that you really want to do…. a charity challenge, fitness goal, travelling adventure, cooking course, music gig, photography, anything that will add value to YOU – happy to help if you don’t know where to begin
8. Try a new recipe each week (or fortnight), and cook double so you have lunch or dinner’s for the week if you are busy.  It ‘s great to vary your nutrition and fun to cook different things – dare you 😉
9. Drink your water, at least 1-2 litres a day and just notice the difference in your skin, energy, mood and immunity, trust me
10. Mix up your fitness training, do something different… even if you goal is the same sport.  Get a DNA Fit Nutrition test if it appeals and really personalise your training plans (happy to help with this).  Set a mini (big) personal goal – like press ups or stretching improvement, chin ups or squats, running up a hill or swimming longer or faster than before.  Simple, tiny monthly goals
11. Call or write a card to a friend each week who means something to you, it doesn’t take long, just to say hi, you rock, it will make a difference
12. Set a goal for your career that will help you to feel more balanced and happy at work… this could be promotion, reducing hours, learning something new… do the 1 thing that would make you most happy if you achieved it
13. Find a kick ass mentor or coach to support you with the one thing you really want to achieve this year…. focus, confidence, career, fitness, life…. and book a session with them.  They are you accountability and support. If you can’t afford it yet, save up, or read their blogs, social media and take action on what they advice
14. Give something back… a random act of kindness each week, time with children or elderly, help a d, charity races and event’s, sponsoring a child with PlanUK, I aim to do one of these each week and we sponsor 2 children with Plan UK.
15. Take time each week to reflect on what’s going well and focus on what you really want to achieve (and this can be relaxing and taking time out) for the week ahead.  Write things down, keep a journal, and choose a word to keep you focused, confidence, radience, strength, brave… you decide.  Build a vision board of people, goals, places and ‘things’ that inspire you to be brave, to believe in your dreams… and slowly, consistently, take action…
16. Ahhh find the JOY in each day, something to be grateful and happy for, even on your hardest day’s, find that time ray of hope, and know it will be better.  Notice the good things, listen to your internal language and conversations, choose to focus on what you want to happen, feel and become, let go of what you don’t.  Share you JOY and be proud of YOU…. grow this.

My afternoon with Action for Happiness, His Holiness The Dalai Lama & Friends

Wow, what an experience, listening to His Holiness The Dalai Lama and friends yesterday at the Action for Happiness, Happier World Event in London.  A real moment of Happiness.


Action for Happiness sets out to create a Happier World, filled with Compassion & Kindness towards ourselves, and others. I truly believe this is a good philosophy for life, and it has served me well through the experiences and challenges, and giving the best to my clients.

The patron is his Holiness, the Dalai Lama & Mark Williamson is the Director of Action for Happiness.

Their key principles are based around your GREAT DREAM… 

G iving – do things for others

R elating – connect with people

E xercising – take care of your body (& nourish your body with #feelgood foods)

A ppreciating – notice the world around you

T rying out – keep learning new things

D irection – have goals to look forward to

R esilience – find a way to bounce back

E motion – take a positive approach

A cceptance – be comfortable (or learn) with who you are (develop self love/respect)

M eaning – be part of something bigger


As I write these out, I really believe they are a fundamental in helping each person to feel better about their life, however tough it is in the moment you are reading this… and also to feel joy and embrace it, if you are having a good time.

The line up of speakers at the event was truly inspiring. I love what Suzy Greaves is doing with Psychologies Magazine & her Happiness Clubs, Mattieu Ricards compassion & values of meditation were insightful and captivating as always, Daniel Goleman, a fountain of wisdom & for me, Richard Davidson a renowned neuroscientist was brilliant.

To have the science linking with the well being I believe is powerful stuff, and his research on neurolplasticity is something I have been reading a huge amount on, personally for my own brain healing (post weils encephalitis) and for many complex GP referral cases I work with.

Richard’s Key Research and evidence to neuro plasticity and looking after your brain, which his Holiness highlighted too are:

  1. Resilience –  to learn, adapt and overcome adversity
  2. The Ability to Savour Positive Outcomes and Experiences, and sustain a positive outlook
  3. Attention – to develop positive habits and a quiet mind, focused in the present.  To quieten your wandering, unhappy mind and move away from things that may ‘feed’ this
  4. Generosity, be kind to others and kind to yourself, engage in things that enhance this, as this will develop positive circuits in the brain, and keep your ‘mental hygiene’ good

The overall statement – Look after & use your brain daily  – if you don’t like something, change what you can, and if you can’t change it, change your thinking. Practise the art of self love, compassion & kindness, whilst looking after yourself too :-)

The speakers whom captivated me the most were the children from John Stainer School, led by Adrian Bethune.  I coach a lot of teenagers who are really struggling with liking the person they are, and finding joy in what they do.   The principles of self love, kindness, mindfulness, of love, wonder, curiosity (i really think we can all use more of this) and so much more really is impacting these children, so exciting and wonderful to see.  I just wish every child (and adult) who doubted themselves had the courage to find these tools and start a journey to feel good.


Action for Happiness run a course called Exploring What Matters, I encourage you to check it out. Psychologies Magazine have also set up Happiness Clubs all over the UK.  Both link really well with my philosophy and values for my Energised Performance clients, so watch this space as we may run both in Bristol and perhaps even on line.  Even if I don’t, get involved and if you have questions, just ask me :-)


So my leaving message, from His Holiness & the other wonderful speakers, to pass onto you is this…

You are you own Master.  You are the Master of your Thoughts, Your Brain & your Body. Some situations or conditions you cannot change, but you can change your way of thinking about them.  Utilise your intelligence daily, nourish your body, develop compassion for yourself and others, journal happy things, learn and adapt from challenging things, nuture self love and inner peace, go on adventures, explore, move your body….. pay attention to your attention.

So there you have a little summary for thought (& action :-) I hope.

DNA Testing… is it worth it?


DNA Testing?

Is it worth it…. it seem’s expensive….what will I actually gain from having it done?  The most common comments I am getting asked, and the questions I thought before having it done.

I’ve watched over the last couple of years the latest trends within the fitness industry, seeing which ones I think are the best to train, educate and progress my knowledge, and the service I offer to my clients.

The DNA Body Performance Pro Test comes in at £250.  What I think is, that as a one off test, with all the information you receive, if it’s something that interests you, its worth the investment.

You will learn how your body responds to certain types of exercise,  how quickly you recover and if you are prone to injury.  The test also looks at your carbohydrate, salt, alcohol, diary tolerance levels, and your ability to for your body to process, produce, synthesis Anti Oxidants, Omega 3, Vit B, D, and your detoxification ability.

What must be taken into consideration, is testing your DNA is a snap shot to enhance your performance, well being, fat loss and enjoyment.  It’s a part of your lifestyle, so if you already have a balanced life, good sleep, good, fresh foods, balanced training and recovery, and fun…. and are looking for an edge to train smarter, or/and you don’t have any of this, and have tried loads of things and nothing quite gives you the motivation and results, DNA Fit I believe is a useful, strong tool.

The results come via email in a great summary sheet, mine is attached above.  Combined with this is a breakdown of each area to give you more advice and knowledge if you would like to know the science and more behind it.

Personally my DNA test was fascinating, way more interesting that I thought it would be, and useful.   I do think it should be taken with caution, for if I had received my results, without the knowledge I have I may have thought… well I can’t do a marathon, or I’m sensitive and intolerant to so much, ahh!! However, I found it so useful, personally and professionally.

Without a doubt I have to manage my food, nutrition and recovery at a higher level than some to complete things without being injured.  Through my years I have had several extreme, near death conditions/sports injuries… having this knowledge helps me to refine things further and I will monitor with interest the results.  I think it was by no coincidence I contracted weils disease and encephalitis following training for an Ironman and eating more carbohydrates.  So, okay huge stress on the body, etc etc… but it’s useful information.

For Team Energised Clients, I think it is exciting and will allow me to fine tune their training programmes and nutrition more specifically. Of course, this is something we do already, as every body is different, and every body at different ages and stages in life is different… but this adds another edge to training.   And I think it is exceptionally relevant for everyone, for GP Referral and complex medical cases to Team GB athletes, business people or teenagers…

Stats out in a recent feature for Healthy Magazine sugggest that 60% of bodyweight varience is down to genetic factors, and 33% were more likely to lose weight by having their DNA tested and following adapted nutrition plan, to a standard plan. Interesting thoughts that are obviously in their infancy in the fitness market, but one I am definitely certain will appeal and benefit a proportion of my clients.

Take some time to recover this Easter…. but how & why….. ?


Recovery?  Hmmmm, do you do that?  I mean really do that.

It’s an interesting one. I coach many people to get motivated to have the confidence to start to get fit.  Then they become fit, and love that feeling.  Or get super focused on the results, almost addicted.  It’s good right? And then I coach people World Champions, Ironman, Triathlon, Marathon’s, adventures, Stage Shows… and the training is tough, and there is a lot.


But what about Rest, Recovery and Adaption…. this is just a simple little blog for thought.

If you are a professional athlete, rest, recovery and adaption is planned in your training. Combined with great nutrition, sports massage and lots more.

If you are someone with big fitness goals, beach #fitbod goals, running your first marathon or ‘semi pro goals’ I think we forget that we are doing ‘life’, work, families, caring, cooking etc as well as training.  And therefore our training needs to be smarter, and have a great sense of quality and wisdom behind it to adapt to our lifestyle.

Yet what needs to be most highlighted is our recovery.  This is KEY.  This is where your body adapts and recovers, where the muscles become stronger, faster and leaner.  Where your body rebalances the stress levels, and burns fat.  Where you reduce the risk of injury, increase your motivation, refuel with delicious food and sleep.

I know, I know… it’s harder to rest when things are going to plan, and frustrating to rest if you are injured…. yet either and both is key.  Above all it reduces your stress levels letting all of the above happen.

So how do I recover well?


I see it as an essential part of training.  I block it into my diary, and think of it as time to rebalance, to catch up with friends or family, to cook and play with a new recipe, to review my training, to do something different.  I also see recover as maintenance with sports massage, osteopathy and kineosiology, as required.   I know this is an expense, but I see it as essential to overall wellbeing, a good role model for my business, to be in client role and to help manage my encephalitis.


Which brings me to what I have learned about recover and a condition….. the smarter you train, with the best, good food that works for you, with lots of sleep and recovery… makes you way stronger, happier and healthier than ‘junk’ training and lots of supplements without the base being strong. But that’s just what I think and recommend…

When I train… I have three types of sessions.  The first is a serious focused, high intensity session.  There may be music, but often there is silence and the focus on my mind on the results I want.  It’s hard, sweaty and only when I am focused on a set goal.  I do love these, but I have to be feeling good.  If I’m not, I will adapt and change the day to get the best quality from the session.  Session two is focused and still challenging, but a little easier, maybe listening to a podcast in the background with plenty of focus on from, technique and developing my overall fitness.  The final session is PLAY, its for fun, it’s what I fancy, doing what I want, for as long as I want.

I believe keeping your training FUN is so important.  Whatever you love to do, do it… from dance to rock climbing, lifting weights to ballet, running to skydiving, find you love and do it. Do it until the motivation ebbs, and then find something else….

I also cycle my training overall, so sometimes I may have a big fitness goal and competition, so for 3 months, this is my FOCUS and priority.  Then for the following 1-2 months at least, it’s in maintenance. Where I do regular little bits of training, but it’s not my priority. Overall I find this helps if I get injured to have a balance in life, and other interests, whilst also reduces the risk of injury.  I also find it enhances my focus to compete at my best, whilst avoiding burnout….

To recover and avoid delayed onset of muscles soreness I believe all the above is key… 

Listening to your body and adapting the sessions accordingly.

Allowing enough recovery from and between key sessions to allow adaption and growth to occur.

Booking a sports massage or osteopathy treatment, or whatever works for you regularly to keep things in balance. Making time to foam roll, and stretch. Having a bath with epsom salts.

Mixing up your training cycles and focus.

Having good, healthy fresh food and making it tasty and interesting

Having plenty of sleep and rest – or as much as you can and adapting if you are short of sleep or stressed at work/children etc, to keep stress levels balanced

LOVEly Week Ahead…..?

Did you have a great weekend? A really LOVEly one? Did you celebrate the things you love in your life, the people and most importantly, did you celebrate wonderful YOU? Or at least something about you that you like a tiny bit? I hope so. If not, do it now….. and do it every week this year. See what happens…

I liked this quote for #fearlessfeb as we start our Make your Life Briliant Course online. Often we think, I have tried this before, I have tried it and I can’t do it, it doesn’t work, there is no point…. etc. We create limitations in our own minds of why we can’t do something, it’s kind of like a comfortable safety net, that doesn’t really work that well, yet it works.

Through my weils and encephalitis, which I don’t really like to talk about too much, but occasionally feels like it might be helpful for you… I have often come to the ‘end’ of a path and felt stuck, frustrated, unsure and confused about what I ‘should’ do next, like the possibilities of progression have ended. And then, with a moment, or a day like this, I pause and reflect. Firstly, its normal in life to have moments of not feeling okay. Then its totally normal to create a safety net to deal with these situations….

Yet I want to jump out of the net, I want to find the possibilities that are out there, I want to find what I have not found…. for only finding and exploring what we don’t know, losing sight of the shore and what is comfortable do we find and learn new things, new feelings and new depths of courage, compassion, enjoyment and happiness…

So my ramble for #Mondaysmotivation today is this….. when you doubt yourself, when you think I just don’t know if this is right but I wish I could give it a go…… do.

Give ‘it’ a go…. the worst that could happen is it doesn’t work, in whatever context that means… but what will definetly happen is that you will find some more possibilities…

So this week, be brave, braver than you think you can be and go find…. find a possibility that you never knew excited and see what happens
